专业概况
在这里学什么?As a mathematics major at SFA, you’ll see how mathematics can be used to solve problems, build connections and open doors in the real world. You’ll have opportunities to attend professional conferences and network with scholars and practitioners in your field. You may elect to present at a mathematics conference or participate in a meeting organized by the department’s math clubs.
You’ll also be able to put your mathematics skills to the test. You could work with local schools or work side-by-side with your professors on research projects that investigate real-world problems like how to manage dominant species in fisheries. Lumberjack mathematicians also explore how "hive mentality" can be modeled by participating in swarm exercises designed to simulate hive behaviors observed in honeybees. You might decide to work with mathematicians who are developing virtual reality apps that will enable people to visualize mathematical concepts. Tomorrow, you might be part of a research project designed to study a problem that doesn’t even exist today.
A bachelor's in mathematics prepares you for work in a wide range of today's leading industries; its emphasis on logic and analytical thinking is a trait valued by employers throughout the world. This degree program also prepares you for graduate studies in mathematics or statistics.
As our world becomes increasingly digital, and computers are part of everything we do, a mathematics- and statistics-based education gives you a competitive advantage. Imagine being part of a team that develops cutting-edge technology or working on a project associated with missions critical to our nation’s security. Mathematics and statistics enable you to acquire jobs that utilize proficiency in those skills.
What kind of careers are available for mathematics and statistics students?
Studying mathematics develops such skills as arguing logically and rigorously, thinking abstractly, formulating and solving problems, analyzing data, and creating and analyzing mathematical models. Employers value these skills; consequently, mathematics majors find themselves in demand by employers for careers in a wide spectrum of fields.
A study of college students' scores on admission tests for graduate and professional schools (e.g. Graduate Management Admission Test, Law School Admission Test) showed that students majoring in mathematics received scores substantially higher than the average on each of the tests studied. In addition, mathematics majors can expect to earn more and have a higher job satisfaction rating than other majors.
