专业概况

The child and family development emphasis provides an in-depth understanding of the growth, change and development of children and families in a social context. Current information emphasizing a lifespan and family systems approach is taught. This knowledge base is essential for careers related to organizations or agencies that provide services to family and children.

Students pursuing the MSHS with a child and family development emphasis will complete the 18-hour MSHS core, which consists of:

HMS 500: Philosophy of Human Sciences

HMS 501: Service Management in the Human Sciences

HMS 502: Employee Development Issues in Human Sciences

HMS 540: Consumer Problems

SOC 550: Social Statistics

SOC 551: Sociological Inquiry

Courses required of students pursuing the MSHS with a human development and family studies (HDFS) emphasis include:

HMS 551: Child Development and Parenting

HMS 552: Family Studies

HMS 586: Adult Development and Aging

Students will choose a final three or nine hours (depending on whether or not they are pursuing a thesis) in consultation with their advisor, based on the students' needs and interests.

Generally, all applicants must have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and a 2.8 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. English Language Scores: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score - 79 IBT (Internet-Based) and 550 PBT (Paper-Based); International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score - Overall band 6.5; Pearson Test of English (PTE) score – 53.
