A bachelor's in mathematics prepares you for work in a wide range of today's leading industries; its emphasis on logic and analytical thinking is a trait valued by employers throughout the world. This degree program also prepares you for graduate studies in mathematics or statistics.

To earn a bachelor's in mathematics, you'll need to complete the following requirements:

40 credit hours required for a mathematics major Required courses (37 hours): MTH 233, 234, 311, 317, 333, 337, 359, 360, 412, 439, 440 and 463 Elective courses (3 hours): MTH 305, 351 or 415

Biomathematics – Modeling natural and biological processes using mathematical techniques and tools Actuarial Science – Applying mathematics principles to finance and insurance industries Operations Research – Employing mathematics to elicit a best possible solution to a problem Cryptography – Securing sensitive communications and information using the principles of mathematics theory Financial Mathematics – Developing investment strategies or designing a financial plan for clients

Get out of the classroom and into the real world

As a mathematics major at SFA, you’ll see how mathematics can be used to solve problems, build connections and open doors in the real world. You’ll have opportunities to attend professional conferences and network with scholars and practitioners in your field. You may elect to present at a mathematics conference or participate in a meeting organized by the department’s math clubs.

You’ll also be able to put your mathematics skills to the test. You could work with local schools or work side-by-side with your professors on research projects that investigate real-world problems like how to manage dominant species in fisheries. Lumberjack mathematicians also explore how "hive mentality" can be modeled by participating in swarm exercises designed to simulate hive behaviors observed in honeybees. You might decide to work with mathematicians who are developing virtual reality apps that will enable people to visualize mathematical concepts. Tomorrow, you might be part of a research project designed to study a problem that doesn’t even exist today.
