Learning Outcomes

Students graduating with a major in gender, women’s, and sexuality studies (GWSS) will demonstrate how to:

use feminist intersectional theory in scholarly and creative practice; evaluate issues, research problems, and construct arguments using GWSS tools and concepts; communicate effectively with diverse communities through speech, writing, and other forms of expression; and work collaboratively with others in diverse communities using core GWSS strengths and skills.

Overview

Students who major in gender, women's, and sexuality studies investigate through an intersectional feminist lens the ways gender and sexuality shape the world in which we live. Students study inequalities of power and privilege, theoretical frameworks for feminist analysis, transnational and global perspectives, and the complex histories and sociocultural dynamics that affect the lives of girls and women. Students participate in a practicum experience, and during their senior year, create a capstone research project.

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in gender, women's, and sexuality studies (GWSS) requires a minimum of 120 s.h., including at least 39 s.h. of work for the major. Students must maintain a g.p.a. of at least 2.00 in all courses for the major and in all UI courses for the major. They also must complete the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences GE CLAS Core.

Gender, women's, and sexuality studies (GWSS) majors work in diverse settings, such as government and nonprofit agencies, newspaper offices, labs, human resource departments, museums, theaters, schools, and hospitals. They secure careers in fundraising, research and advocacy, political organizing, counseling, teaching, writing, publishing, diversity training, and international development. They become social workers, nurse midwives, doctors, editors, librarians, managers, lawyers, and professors.

The major prepares students to continue their studies in a wide range of graduate programs and professional schools, such as gender and women’s studies, history, anthropology, and communication studies, as well as in schools of law, art, education, public health, business, nursing, social work, public affairs and public policy, international relations, medicine, and journalism.
