专业概况

在这里学什么?

The Master of Arts in Asian American Studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to theories and methods in Asian American Studies, as well as coursework in Asian American history, social sciences, and humanities. Students may write a research thesis, conduct a field report, or do a creative project as their culminating projects. Graduates of the program primarily enter academia or professional work with high contact with Asian American communities.

The program consists of 30 units. No more than six units are allowed in Directed Reading or Special Study or a combination of both. A student must perform satisfactorily in the first year of graduate study by maintaining a minimum grade of B in all courses taken toward the degree or be subject to dismissal. CR/NC units are not acceptable towards the degree. A graduate student in good standing must maintain a B (3.0) GPA throughout the course of study.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Gain an interdisciplinary understanding of the histories, cultures, and racialization of Asian Americans.
  • Apply course concepts and critical theories and methodologies to identify the structural and ideological forces that shape the lives of Asian Americans.
  • Apply the skills and knowledge acquired toward the self-determination and empowerment of Asian American communities.
  • Develop values of social justice, equity, activism, and respect for differences.
  • Construct evidence-based and persuasive oral and written arguments with proper citations and support from multiple forms of knowledge, including community and academic resources, that communicate what students have discovered.

Career Outlook

Both baccalaureate and master’s degrees can be used to enhance work in Asian American communities, enhance career opportunities in the Pacific Rim areas, prepare for teaching and other professional careers, and prepare for doctoral studies or other professional degrees.

为来自中国的学生设计 An applicant must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and the equivalent major coursework for the program area to which application is made. English language requirement: Minimum score of 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 80 on the internet-based (iBT) test; International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.5 overall band score; Pearson Test of English (PTE): minimum score of 55.
