A dentist has earned the degree of either a Doctor of Dental Surgery or a Doctor of Medical Dentistry. Dentists are taught to examine and treat their patients for diseases and injuries of the teeth, mouth and encompassing area. This also includes appearance enhancement through various techniques. The majority of dentists are self-employed general practitioners who handle a plethora of dental needs; however, there are nine areas of further specializations a dentist may take.

No matter the route, a dentistry degree requires four years from an accredited school of dentistry, and further specialization requires supplemental years of training. A pre-dental student does not have to complete an undergraduate degree to apply to dental programs.
